| Having worked in an O.R. before, I can tell you that there is no such thing as "normal" back surgery. It is very difficult and most likely requires special skils not had by the ordinary general surgeon. Also, I can also say that these things are more rare that you might think (or that the hospital will tell you). In the O.R. there were dozens and dozens of surgeries a day, 5 days a week, 2 weeks a year. Only in the most rare cases did a patient ever expire on the table or in the recovery room. Please urge your family to get a more complete report on what happened, although I'm sure the hospital will be doing so anyway. Again, I am very sorry for your loss.
